Next Smart Saver tariff FAQs.
What is a smart energy tariff and is it the same as a time of use tariff?
Next Smart Saver is a smart energy tariff but can also be referred to as a time of use tariff. So, what’s the difference? A smart energy tariff includes any tariff which uses smart meter technology to accurately measure and record energy consumption at different times. Meanwhile, time of use is a common feature within a smart energy tariff.
Time of use is a type of pricing structure where the price of electricity usually varies depending on the time of day. Electricity costs less when demand is low, and more when demand is high, rewarding consumers who use energy during off-peak hours.
Do I need to have home energy tech like an electric vehicle charger or heat pump to switch to this tariff?
No, with Next Smart Saver you don't need any home tech to be eligible. The tariff is available to all customers who have a communicating smart meter for their electricity.
If you do have an electric vehicle charger or heat pump, please look at our Next Drive and Next Pumped tariffs which have been specifically designed for those energy tech, and could save you even more on your bills.
Why have you chosen these specific time periods?
On average over the course of a year, 2am-5am tends to be the cheapest period of the day for customers. We deemed 3 hours would be enough time for households to schedule their appliances, whilst keeping prices as low as possible.
At peak times of demand between 4pm-7pm we see the highest costs of the day. This is reflected in Next Smart Saver with a higher rate during this period. However this enables the remaining 21 hours to be even cheaper than usual and allows for homes to save on their bills, by moving some of their evening usage outside of those three hours.
What can I do to shift my energy use?
Don't worry, you don't need to turn the lights off! During the peak period you should try to avoid using appliances that use more electricity than most. Here are some examples of those appliances:
Electric cooker/oven.
Electric shower.
Panel/fan heaters.
Immersion heaters.
Air conditioning.
Hot tubs.
Kettles.
Washing machines/tumble dryers.
Most modern day appliances have a built-in timer set to come on later so you can time your dishwasher to come on during super off-peak/off-peak periods and make use of the cheaper rates.
My smart meter is not communicating. Can I still have this tariff?
To be eligible for this smart energy tariff, you need to possess a functioning smart meter capable of transmitting half-hourly usage data to us. Please speak with an energy specialist who will look at what options are available to you.
What will happen if my meter stops communicating once I’m on the Next Smart Saver tariff?
If your meter stops communicating once on the tariff, we can attempt to reconnect your meter remotely. We'll try this first to avoid needing to visit your home. If we can't restore communication remotely, we'll arrange for an engineer to visit your home and replace your meter.
I’m confused by the p/kWh in the ‘Total consumption’ line of my bill. How is this worked out?
This is an average of the price per kWh. This is calculated by dividing the total cost by the total kWh consumed. There are only 3 different electricity prices on Next Smart Saver.
Why does the labelling on my bill and welcome pack not match up to the peak, off-peak and super off-peak wording?
This is a BETA product and the bill will display labelling that doesn’t quite match up to how we’ve described the product to you. This will be changed in the future, but, so that you are aware - where you see annual estimated usage on your bill - the labels mean the following in relation to your usage and rates:
Day = Peak rate (4pm-7pm).
Night = Super off-peak rate (2am-5am).
Off Peak = Off-peak rate (5am-4pm and 7pm-2am).
Why does my in-home display not correspond with my tariff?
Due to the way this tariff works, your in-home display will stop working. However, you'll be able to keep up to date with your energy use through the E.ON Next App.
I have a SMETS1 meter and my heating/hot water is reliant on my E7 meter. Can I have this tariff?
If this is you, then switching to the Next Smart Saver tariff could risk cutting off your heating and hot water. Unfortunately, in this case, you would not be eligible for this tariff. If you're not too sure, contact us and we can help you check.
I’m not shifting my energy use as much as I’d like to. Can I change my tariff?
There is no internal or external exit fee on this tariff, so if you're not shifting your energy usage and would like to choose a different energy tariff you can do so without any exit fees.
