Your step by step solar panel installation guide.

Here’s how we get them on to your roof.

So, how do you get solar panels installed?

Well we’re here to explain the whole process to you, from the initial discussions, quoting on a new solar PV system, through to installation and then managing your solar energy through our E.ON Home app.

1

First contact.

After getting a price and filling out our online contact form, one of our experts will get in touch to help you decide on the best solar options for you and give you a quick quote.

Once you agree to go ahead with the quote, we’ll discuss payment options with you.

2

Organising a detailed technical survey.

If you want to proceed, then one of our experts will visit your property to assess your home and confirm your roof measurements, as well as finalising how the solar PV system will connect into your existing electrical system.

3

Arranging your solar panel installation.

We will complete all our design checks, and then depending on what system you’ve chosen, then we may need to apply to your local grid operator to request connection. But don’t worry about this as we will manage the whole process for you.

We'll then get in contact to arrange installation and let you know the next steps (including when the scaffolding will be put up).

4

Scaffolding and install mounts fitted.

Scaffolding will be put up – normally a day or two before installation - so that the solar installers will have safe access to your roof.

5

Solar panels, inverter and battery installed.

On the day of installation, our MCS certified installers will start by fitting the panel roof fixings – screwing roof hooks into the rafters, then fixing horizontal rails between the hooks, onto which the photovoltaic solar panels will be clamped to create a rigid array.

Whilst the solar panels are being fitted and wired in, our electrician will install the inverter and connect up the battery (if you’ve decided to get one) and connect the system into your property’s electricity supply (we may need to turn off your electricity for a short while whilst we do this).

The inverter is what transforms DC electricity from the solar panels into AC electricity your home can use.

6

After installation.

Once everything’s up and running and checked over, our team will show you how to use your solar PV system. A few days after installation, we will send through all your documentation, certificates and warranty details.

E.ON Home energy management.

When your installation is complete you'll receive an invite to use our exclusive E.ON Home energy management system and instructions on how to use it to monitor the solar energy consumption throughout your home.

1 Price is based on a 6 panel package (on-roof), fitting to concrete tiles (not slate), single elevation of scaffold, with single-phase electrics, and no complexities, for example installing above a conservatory or digging trenching required for electrics.

How long does a solar panel installation take?

As part of the initial solar PV survey we’ll let you know how long we expect it to take. Typically a small solar PV system on a single roof can be done in a day, but most systems take two days to install.

We’ll also need to put the scaffolding a couple of days beforehand and then take them down a few days after the solar panels are installed.

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

Whether your roof faces south, east or west your home is perfect to have solar panels fitted. North facing roofs will not receive as much sunlight and therefore won't be as effective, so we don’t normally recommend fitting panels to north-facing roofs.

The pitch of your roof should be between 20° and 50°.

As part of the process, we’ll inspect your roof to make sure that it’s in good condition and can have solar panels installed.

Do I need planning permission?

Adding photovoltaic solar panels to your home is classed as a "Permitted Development" in the UK so standard solar panel installations do not require planning permission.

However, you’ll need to obtain planning permission if your home is a listed building, world heritage site or the installation does not meet standard guidelines.

Benefit from a solar battery.

Adding a battery can help you store more of the solar power you generate, so you can use it when you need it to help lower your electricity bills even further.

Easy to add on with a choice of battery sizes.

If you're having solar panels installed by us, you can add solar battery storage to your system at the same time for as little as £3,468. To make it more affordable, we offer flexible payment options, allowing you to spread the cost over 120 months. We're a credit broker not a lender.

If you already have solar PV panels and want to add a battery system alongside your existing system, then we offer systems from just £5,995.

So, don't wait any longer, join the renewable energy revolution to increase your energy independence and reduce your carbon footprint. Simply request your free solar battery quote and take the first step towards a more sustainable future.
