Energy saving tips

Have you visited our online community yet? The E.ON Next community is a friendly, welcoming place for customers to share their knowledge and get advice from one another. The community covers everything from energy solutions and cost saving tips to how we can build a sustainable future together. It’s a popular place to join too. We recently celebrated our community reaching an amazing 18,000 members.

That milestone means we have 18,000 people (like top contributors @Tommysgirl, @JoeSoap and @retrotecchie) sharing tips and advice and getting support from one another. Each one of our members has a unique experience that could be helpful or inspiring to others. Like the man who went on a journey from being super sceptical about smart meters to trying them for the first time. And the woman who shared her top 10 energy saving tips during the winter, with her online post reaching nearly 90,000 views.

There are plenty of ways you can get involved in our community. Maybe you just want to have a browse through the threads and read the topics you find interesting or helpful. Maybe you want to share your thoughts in the comments section. Or maybe you’re ready to start your own conversation and invite others to join in.

Join the conversation.

Let’s take a look at one of the helpful conversations that members are having in our community every day. As we mentioned earlier, one of our members decided to share her personal list of energy saving tips, including:

  • Turn your room thermostat down by 1°C, and your thermostatic radiator valves even lower in rooms you are not using regularly.

  • Only boil enough water in the kettle or pans when cooking to cover what you need.

  • Fit draught excluders to front and back doors and windows.

  • Wash your laundry at slightly lower temperatures. And do one full load rather than two half loads, and keep tumble dryer use to the minimum if possible.

  • Clean any dust which may have gathered down the backs of radiators (while they're off) with the narrow vacuum cleaner hose attachment.

And when she shared her own energy saving tips, it encouraged other members to do the same.

One member replied:

“Great tips! I've personally found electricity usage to be far lower by washing bedding/towels at 30°C with a laundry cleanser that kills bacteria. It's the same as washing at 60°C or above but uses far less electricity, as the cleanser in the conditioner drawer achieves the same!”

And another member chimed in:

“If you have a separate spin and drain cycle on your washing machine, always give the laundry an extra spin to remove as much water as possible.

My Candy does a lovely 59 minute 'quick wash' which is suitable for everything except towels. The default temperature is 40°C but I can set it to 30°C with a single button press. That saves almost 300Wh, or nearly 10p, compared to washing at 40°C.

A ten minute 1600rpm spin cycle takes about 100Wh of energy. That saves almost half an hour in the tumble drier for a 10kg full load.”

Why not check out the thread for yourself? You could pick up an extra handy tip or two, or simply enjoy the hot debate over the best setting to put your toaster on.
