Our annual smart meter installation targets and performance.

Why get a smart meter?

At E.ON Next, we believe upgrading all of our customers to the latest technology in metering will benefit all. This is why we support the government's objective to get a smart meter in every home and business. This will help customers budget and control when and how they use their energy. It will also be a way of helping the UK achieve its net zero target.

To date we have installed over 6 million smart meters, which is a great achievement and shows our ongoing commitment.

2025.

The table below shows the 2025 meter upgrade targets for E.ON Next and npower Business Solutions. Just as with previous years, the Target Number for domestic and non-domestic gas and electricity installations is determined by the formula set by the government. For our domestic customers, we break the target down to apportion it between credit and prepayment terms.

We believe everyone should have a smart meter, so we'll be getting in touch with customers who don’t yet have one to offer them a smart meter and support them through this smart journey. Why not get yours today?

2024.

Our Calculated Annual Planned Target was set by the government using a formula for calculating the number of meters each energy supplier must upgrade in 2024 and 2025, towards an overall aim of at least 74.1% of customers having a smart meter by the end of this year. In 2024, that meant, based on the number of E.ON Next and npower Business Solutions customers who still had 'old-style' meters at the start of the year, we were set a challenge to upgrade 284,366 gas and 388,386 electricity meters to smart by the end of 2024. A further breakdown of the targets is provided in the table below. The numbers in brackets show how we performed against each of these targets.

The government’s approach to calculating in year targets used data from across the industry and assumed a more significant peak in demand in 2024. Based on our own experience of installing smart meters for E.ON Next customers, we predicted demand for smart would be lower than government forecasts in 2024 and slightly higher than government forecast in 2025. The final number of smart meters we installed in 2024, is in line with our own forecasts, so we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved.
