Everything you need to know about dual fuel tariffs.
This guide breaks everything down so you can make the best decision for your home. We’ll cover all the important parts — from comparing tariffs to understanding what a dual tariff actually is.
What is a dual fuel tariff?
Let’s start with the basics. A dual fuel tariff means that you get your electricity and gas from the same supplier (us, for example)! You’ll receive one combined bill showing your electricity and gas use. It's a bit like getting a package deal. As you can imagine, this can have many benefits.
It’s worth noting that some homes only use electricity. If yours is one of them, you won’t be able to switch to a dual fuel tariff — you don’t need to.
What are the benefits of dual fuel?
It’s more convenient.
Forget about juggling two bills from different providers. Switching to a dual fuel tariff puts everything in one convenient place. It’s much easier keeping track of your total electricity and gas use with one bill from one supplier.
It can save you money.
Some suppliers give you a discount for choosing a dual fuel tariff, saving you money. They see it as a way of rewarding you for trusting them with both energy supplies.
It can make your energy life simpler.
If you ever need to contact your supplier, whether your query is about electricity or gas, there’s only one touchpoint. This means less admin and paperwork — sounds dreamy!
Do your research first.
However, there are some potential downsides to consider. For example, a dual fuel tariff might not always be the cheapest choice. So it’s best to check with the supplier you have in mind before switching.
Plus, if you do decide to switch before your current deal is up, you may have to pay an early exit fee. A little research before signing up to a new tariff can make a real difference.
What's the average dual fuel bill in the UK?
Giving an exact number for a dual fuel bill is going to be tricky (sorry to disappoint). However, we can share an average. According to Ofgem’s energy price cap press release in February 2025, the average household paying by Direct Debit for dual fuel was £1,849 per year. Though, it’s 9.4% (£159) higher than the previous year, it’s a massive 22% (£531) lower than the start of 2023 when the energy crisis peaked.
The following graph* gives you more insight into the average dual fuel energy bill over the last three years.
* Graph is based on the Ofgem price cap, from January 2022 to April 2025. Visit Ofgem for current pricing.
In general, annual bills can swing anywhere between £1,200 and £2,500 — sometimes more. Naturally, you'll get higher bills in the winter than in the summer. One thing you might want to consider is looking at fixed energy tariffs to help you avoid those pesky price cap changes.
Is a dual fuel tariff always cheaper?
Here's the honest truth: dual fuel isn't always cheaper. How many pennies you part with is down to factors like location and how much energy you use. Don’t fall for clever advertising, get all the facts by comparing prices across multiple suppliers.
Finally, don’t just look at the overall price, get close to the details. Compare the price you’ll pay per unit of energy, that’s where you’ll see the real difference.

Choosing the right dual fuel tariff for you.
Compare prices.
Compare, compare, compare to catch the best deal. Dig into the unit rates for gas and electricity, and factor in the daily standing charge. Not every supplier offers a dual fuel tariff, but most big names do — including us! We can give you a quote based on your postcode because prices vary depending on your location.
Consider contract lengths.
Contract lengths matter. A fixed rate locks prices for a set time — reassuring in a rocky market. Just make sure you check exit fees or you could get stung if your situation changes. If you want flexibility, a variable tariff or tracker tariff such as Next Pledge might be a better fit. Though, your bills normally go up and down every three months with the price cap.
Look for additional benefits.
What else matters to you? Perhaps it’s a smart meter to keep tabs on your energy use. Or maybe it’s top notch customer service ratings. We offer lots of great offers, whether you’re new to us or already a firm friend.
Make greener choices.
Some suppliers also offer tariffs with green initiatives too. At E.ON Next, we’re proud to partner with the Woodland Trust, the UK's largest woodland conservation charity. When you pick one of our fixed tariffs, we'll make a one-off donation to the Woodland Trust on your behalf.
